Surayya Tyabji, an artist from Hyderabad’s influential Tyabji family, played a significant role in shaping India’s national symbols. Historical accounts and family records credit her with illustrating the replacement of the Congress-era charkha with the 24-spoked Ashoka Chakra in the national flag adopted in 1947. She also contributed to the visual design of India’s national emblem featuring the Ashokan Lion Capital. Despite these contributions, her role remained largely overlooked in mainstream accounts of India’s history.
