Aadhaar presented India with an unprecedented computing challenge: establishing unique identities for more than a billion people using biometrics collected under diverse real-world conditions. UIDAI addressed the problem through large-scale 1:N matching, multi-modal biometrics, filtering and multiple biometric technology providers. The system was designed to reduce computational demands while managing biometric limitations and error rates. Its development became a significant engineering case study in building reliable digital infrastructure for a population of unprecedented scale.
