Families searching for loved ones after catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border gathered at a medical centre in Kathmandu on Saturday, scanning photographs of the dead as the confirmed death toll climbed above 600. Footage shows people outside Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Medicine searching rows of victims’ photographs posted on walls. Others put up notices with details of missing relatives and friends, along with contact information. Kankakumar, whose son has been missing since leaving his hotel in Timure at around 08:00 local time on Wednesday, said his family had been unable to find any information about him. “We went to Trisuli army camp yesterday but got no information,” he said. “I hope there are many people alive in tunnels and jungles, and they need to be rescued on time. We are still hopeful, but the government is very slow in the rescue process. We could see all these helicopters going around; we need to take help from our neighbours from India and China,” Kankakumar added. The desperate search for answers comes three days after a massive collapse of glacial ice and rock sent water, mud and debris tearing through valleys along the Nepal-China border on Wednesday. More than 600 people have been confirmed dead, while thousands remain missing. Timure, a border settlement in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, was among the areas devastated as the flood surged downstream, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. Rescue teams are continuing to search flood-hit areas, battling deep mud, destroyed roads and the threat of further flooding as they race to reach anyone still trapped.
