India’s economy grew by a robust 7.8% in the first quarter, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hail the figures as proof of the country’s collective strength amid wars and global uncertainty. Taking a swipe at his critics, PM Modi said the “doomsayers were doomed” while India “bloomed yet again”, and also referred to what he called the “jhooth ki goonj”.
The Opposition, however, says the headline GDP number does not tell the complete story, raising concerns over agricultural growth, manufacturing, quality jobs and rising debt. Is the 7.8% growth figure proof of a resilient economy—or are there deeper concerns beneath the headline number?
