Despite near-universal enrolment at the primary level, India continues to lose a significant number of girls before they complete secondary school. UDISE+ data presented in Parliament shows the secondary dropout rate fell to 8% in 2025–26, yet adolescent girls remain vulnerable to economic hardship, domestic responsibilities, social norms and limited access to continued education.
