The update allows eligible users to connect with new people without sharing their phone numbers while keeping phone number-based accounts intact. Users can manage their usernames from settings, receive in-chat notifications when contacts update usernames, and optionally enable a username key for added privacy. The rollout is expected to expand gradually, with wider availability planned later this year.
