Firefighters are battling intense wildfires across Spain’s eastern Valencia region as changing winds fuel the spread of several blazes. A wildfire broke out in Segorbe after a lightning strike late Thursday and rapidly expanded as wind direction and speed shifted. More than 1,000 residents of nearby Gatova were evacuated as the flames threatened homes, while others were told to shelter in place. Aerial firefighting resources and Spain’s Military Emergency Unit have joined the response as authorities raised the wildfire emergency to Level 2.
